Amélia and her husband, and main carer, Gabriel attend a day center every day. Amélia likes having the attention of other people. She always liked to sing and dance, and she used to love knitting and lace-making but she is not able to do it anymore. Amélia is already in an advanced stage of dementia and has nearly no verbal communication. Nevertheless, she intensively communicates non-verbally through facial expressions, gestures, and body posture. Amélia gets very happy when others treat her well, and despite her impairments, she is able to distinguish who cares for her or not. What kind of object could you use to communicate with someone who cannot speak?

​A D. Amélia e o marido e cuidador principal, o Sr. Gabriel, frequentam o centro de dia, todos os dias. A D. Amélia gosta de ter a atenção dos outros. Sempre gostou de cantar e dançar, e adorava fazer malha e renda, mas já não consegue fazê-lo. A D. Amélia já está numa fase avançada de demência e praticamente já não tem capacidade de comunicar verbalmente. No entanto, ela comunica intensamente de forma não verbal, através de expressões faciais, gestos e postura corporal. A D. Amélia fica muito feliz quando os outros a tratam bem e, apesar das suas dificuldades, é capaz de distinguir quem a estima, ou não.
