Marc received the diagnosis of dementia at the age of 48 years old. One year later he has to live at a care home because his wife Silvia and son Jonathan of 18 years old, can’t take care of him anymore. Marc is very confused and has difficulties with all activities except eating. He enjoys his food, eating everything you put in front of him. However, he has difficulties eating with a fork and knife.
Silvia would like to still take Marc with her to dinner parties with family and friends, but she admits to being ashamed because of the way Marc eats. She tells me; “When people see him eating like that, they see the disease and start making these comments like ‘Oh, he can eat well’ like he’s a child”.

Marc recebeu o diagnóstico de demência aos 48 anos. Um ano depois, teve que ir morar num lar porque a sua esposa Silvia e o seu filho Jonathan de 18 anos, não conseguem mais cuidar dele. Marc está muito confuso e tem dificuldades com todas as atividades, exceto comer. Ele gosta da comida, comendo tudo o que é colocado à frente dele. No entanto, ele tem dificuldade em comer com garfo e faca.
Silvia ainda gostaria de levar Marc com ela para jantares com a família e amigos, mas ela admite ter vergonha pela forma como Marc come. Ela me disse: “Quando as pessoas o vêem a comer assim, vêem a doença e começam a fazer comentários como ‘Ah, ele consegue comer bem’, como se fosse uma criança”.
